Obituary for Philip Edward "Phil" Harper

Philip Edward "Phil" Harper
Harper, Philip Edward

Philip Edward Harper, 82, of Vancouver BC, died January 6th 2017. Phil Harper, passed away quietly in his sleep at the Villa Carital, in Vancouver, BC. after a long illness.

His time spent at the University of Toronto as a Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) , would gift him with friendships that spanned a lifetime. Phil’s passion for all things nautical lead him to the Canadian Naval Reserves and various careers in the shipping business and a later career with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. His love of music brought him not only hours of joy but one Saturday afternoon of Jazz at the King Edward Hotel, where he met his future wife, Lorraine. Phil and Lorraine traded in the cold winters and busyness as many easterners do, and followed a shared dream and moved to the perpetual Spring picturesque Vancouver or as Phil called it, “La La Land.” They lived among the casually dressed and laid back life stylers into their “golden years.” Simple comforts is what Phil enjoyed; morning coffee with his crossword, a casual session of playing solitaire, listening to Jazz or trips to the driving range to hit a bucket of balls. At times he would miss his bus home from work just to observe the hustle and bustle of the other commuters and enjoy the late evening sun. There was no rush as he believed life ought to ‘be’. Phil knew his love was waiting at home.

He is survived by his loving wife Lorraine. Daughter Kelly Harper of Toronto, son Jason (Lisa) of Ottawa; and stepchildren Kathleen Kelly-Driscoll of Vancouver, Darren Kelly (Corry) of Montreal. Two loving grandsons Jameson and Jake of Ottawa. Predeceased by his stepson, Bradley Kelly of Montreal.

Phil is in heaven now sauntering amongst the clouds in his salmon coloured jacket, the second half of a dry “Martin” in his hand and Jazz filling his ears. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
