It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Murray Allan Gibbs on June 13, 2026, in Burnaby, British Columbia, after a courageous battle with an aggressive cancer.
Murray was born in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and grew up in Richmond and South Delta. His family settled there before the George Massey Tunnel was opened, when Tsawwassen was still a landscape of farms, fields, forests, and open spaces. For a young boy, it was paradise.
It was during those early years that Murray discovered his passion for art. He spent countless hours drawing giant Marvel comic book heroes on sheets of brown paper, earning admiration from family and friends alike. What began as childhood enthusiasm developed into a lifelong talent. Murray became an accomplished graphic artist and eventually founded his own business, Murray's Signs. As the sign industry moved rapidly toward digital production, Murray remained faithful to traditional craftsmanship. He became well known throughout the Vancouver area for his hand-painted lettering, cartoons, and caricatures, preserving an art form that was gradually disappearing.
During the past several years, Murray also worked in the film industry as a talented signwriter on feature movies as well as on various series, including Riverdale and Watson most recently.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Linda, his brother Glenn, his stepchildren, his grandchildren, and the many relatives and friends whose lives he touched.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.
