Mihaly (Mike) Kenderes

October 3, 1941 — May 12, 2021

Mihaly “Mike” Kenderes known as “Mike The Shoemaker” died May 12 2021 at the age of 79 years. He was born in Cegled, Hungary in 1941. He is predeceased by both his parents and brothers from Hungary.

Mike worked in the coal mines in Hungary at a young age. He immigrated to Canada in 1957. He first was in Red Deer Alberta where he married in 1961 having his first daughter then again in 1971 to have his second daughter. He was back and forth like a nomad mining in Yellowknife, NWT or following the horse races from 1960-1982. When his good friend John Kohajda asked him to join in a new adventure opening a shoe repair business in 1982 in Surrey, BC. Mike ran the shop from 1985-1987 after John left the business. He than worked out of Cloverdale Race Track until he retired in 2001.

Mike was an easy going, laid back guy who battled with addictions all his life. He was very active in AA having received is 50 year pin for sobriety in 2018. He also joined GA in 2001 to deal with his gambling addiction. Through his activities he made many special friends introducing them to the 12 steps by giving them a stone to keep in their pocket and rub.

In April 1996 he met Eva Dupre at a singles dance, she became his close companion. They travelled to Europe in 1998 to visit with family and friends. He made several trips back to Hungary after that.

He was grounds keeper for Dr. Murphy and purchased a trailer at Harrison Hotsprings which became his primary residence till his stroke/health decline in 2019. He played cards attended meetings, making many close friends in the area.

He leaves to mourn his companion and close friend Eva Dupre of Ferndale, Washington, his daughters Norah Woychyshyn of Brandon, MB, Quineata Kenderes (Maurice) of Edmonton, AB, Ex-wife Ilonna, close friends: Gizelle, John and Helen Kohajda and so many more too numerous to mention. He will be missed by his faithful dog Max.

Ever a ladies’ man, he will be missed for his infectious laugh and beautiful blue eyes that light up when he saw those he loved.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Alano Club in Chilliwack, BC.

A Memorial Tea was held Friday October 1st, 2021. May Mike Rest in Peace now that his final wishes have been met and ashes spread.
