Lou Sekora

Lou passed away peacefully on August 1, 2026 following a lengthy illness. Lou was the second youngest of 15 children born to Irene and Lucas Sekora on November 4, 1931 in Hafford, Saskatchewan. He was predeceased by his first wife Fran and survived by his loving partner Sylvia, daughter Louise, sister Kay and his large extended family and friends. 

As a young man, Lou and his brother left the farm life, headed to the west coast and made Vancouver their home. In those early years, without any money in his pockets, Lou worked many jobs before settling into a career working and managing Aristocratic Restaurants Vancouver. He found he had a passion for other areas of the food industry but became restless after a number of years and was ready for something new. He was keen to resolve public issues and soon politics became his true calling. 

Lou began his foray into political life with the District of Coquitlam School Board, followed by Coquitlam Council, Coquitlam Mayor 1983-1997, MP for Port Moody-Coquitlam 1998, Immigration Judge 2001-2004, Coquitlam Council 2005-2013. While serving the people of Coquitlam, Lou was also a long-standing member of the Gizeh Shriners of B. C. and Yukon. He was elected potentate for the year 1984 and remained a lifetime member. He loved animals, horse racing, golf and a challenging game of cribbage. After 40+ years meeting the demands of the political arena Lou immersed himself in the field of jade and gold mining. 

In the last few years before Lou’s health declined, one of his greatest pleasures was simply to take a drive down country roads that he hadn’t driven before, stop for a green tea frappuccino and then head for home. 

Lou, forever in our hearts and memories.
