Jerzy Lubisz

It is with profound sadness and loss that we announce the passing of Jerzy Kazimierz Lubisz, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Jerzy passed away suddenly and tragically in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Steveston. His beloved dog Skipper perished with him.
Jerzy was born in 1943 in Poland to Genowefa and Marian Lubisz. He was predeceased by his first wife, Krystyna. He leaves behind his wife of 42 years, Wanda, children Aleksandra, Charles, Natalia, and Monika, and seven grandchildren, Nylah, Kesler, Anderson, Kaiya, Micah, Hudson, Aria, and his sister Alicja.
Jerzy studied at Politechnika Łódzka (Łódz University of Technology) in Łódz, Poland, where he earned his Masters of Mechanical Engineering degree. In Poland he was actively involved in the sailing community and achieved the rank of Captain, sailing great Polish yachts from Baltic Sea ports to Iceland, Faroe Islands, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and all over the Baltic Sea.
He left Poland just before martial law was imposed in 1981 and ended up in Calgary, Canada, and later Edmonton. He worked briefly as an engineer but could not find his place away from the ocean. Sailing was his passion and as soon as he found out that in British Columbia on the Pacific Ocean, there could be an opportunity to combine his passion and provide for the family, he did not hesitate. He went to the coast and first acquired Ella Maude, a salmon trawler, and later Pathfinder III, used for tuna fishing. He has been fishing ever since, for 25 years, hoping that someday, when he retires, he will sail around the world.
Known to many as Jurek, George, Mrówa, he was involved with the sailing community in Vancouver, often hosting Polish sailors and sailing boats.
He enjoyed annual trips to Mexico, where he was widely known as Jorge Pescador. He made acquaintances quickly and easily, and was very popular in Mexico, where many people knew him and recognized his booming voice from afar.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at White Eagle Polish Hall in Victoria, BC, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA.
