Apr 16, 1929 — Sep 28, 2026

Vancouver

Born on a farm near Waskada, Manitoba, on April 16, 1929, George did his schooling in the Waskada area, taught junior high school at Manitou, Manitoba and then entered United College for Arts and Theology.

George married Jocelyn (also known as Jo) Hardy of Winnipeg and Sudbury, Ontario in 1956 and was ordained in 1957.

Appointed to the First Nations Communities of God’s Lake and Island Lake, he served those communities for eight years, then moving to Glenboro and Dauphin in Manitoba, and then to Okotoks and Calgary, Alberta.

George and Jo had two sons, Matthew and Harold (deceased in 1983) and two chosen daughters, Connie and Penny.

While at Okotoks, George acknowledged his homosexual orientation and arranged divorce from Jo, his wife of 26 years.

He continued in ministry at Scarboro United Church until 1988 when he resigned from ministry and publicly divulged his orientation.

In subsequent years he lived in San Diego, California with his partner, Louis Rivera, and later with Manuel Costa Neto, of Fortaleza, Brazil.

He spent the last 20 years of his life in the Vancouver, British Columbia area, where he developed a wide circle of friends.

George passed away quietly in Vancouver Hospice on September 28, 2026, at the age of 97.

He leaves to mourn his three adult children Matthew, with wife Kit; Connie, with partner Ron; and Penny, with partner Billy; as well as his four grandchildren Jessica, Cailey, Joshua, and Rachel; three great-grandchildren Chloe, Evie, and Sage; and his sister Mae, with husband Bill. He will be deeply missed by extended family in Manitoba and Alberta; and friends throughout Canada, the US, and many other places around the world.

A celebration of George’s life will take place at his place of residence, at 1030 Burnaby Street in Vancouver, on Friday October 16, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
