Douglas John Farmer

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Doug Farmer from a heart attack on Saturday July 18, 2026 in Vancouver.

Doug was born on December 1, 1958 in Fredericton New Brunswick to Rev John Farmer and June Eastham Farmer. His family moved to Stanley New Brunswick shortly after Doug’s birth and when his Dad joined the Canadian military, they lived in Oromocto NB, Werl Germany, London ON, Moose Jaw SK, Baden and Lahr Germany and Ottawa ON. In 1991, Doug moved to Toronto and then to Vancouver where he lived for the remainder of his life.

Doug received a B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Carleton University in 1982 and began his career in Ottawa with the biopharma company Perkin Elmer. In 1993 he shifted his focus to high tech when he received a job building local computer networks with Chevron in British Columbia. In 1996 he founded his own company Forefront Systems, and for the next 30 years, developed a range of software products for multiple clients including Apple and various BC Ministries. In later years, Doug also worked as an iOS Software Developer with Boeing Canada in Richmond BC.

Doug was a gentle, creative and intelligent man of many interests who genuinely cared about the people he loved and the world around him. One of his deepest concerns was about climate change, and he was dedicated to combatting misinformation by sharing accurate data about its impact and effects. Just before his unfortunate death, was working on a unique mobile app that could help people measure the effects of temperature and humidity on their health.

Doug was a unique and independent soul; he enjoyed solitude but still was able to cultivate a wide circle of friends who could count on him at a moment’s notice. He was a gifted photographer of the natural world, a musician and lover of classical music. His interests in high tech, the implications of artificial intelligence, space travel, animism and plant intelligence, philosophy, physics, astronomy and quest for scientific knowledge knew no bounds.

One of his proudest accomplishments was to submit the winning name of Canada’s Snowbirds acrobatic aerial team in a contest when he was just 12 years old.

Doug is survived by his sister Diane Perazzo, brother Michael Farmer, brother-in-law Richard Perazzo, sister-in-law Kendal Farmer, niece Elyse Farmer, nephews Colin Finkle, Cameron Finkle, Evan Farmer, Richard Perazzo Jr, James Perazzo and grand nephew Kallum Finkle.

His unexpected loss is beyond devastating to his family and friends.
