Brigitte Hackl

April 25, 1930 — June 17, 2020

With much sadness, we announce the passing of Brigitte (Betty) Hackl (nee Filmann). She was born within a German community in Topcza, Poland, and immigrated to Canada in 1952, settling in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where her older sister Charlotte and husband Willy lived. There she met and married Siegfried (Siggy) Hackl, who coincidentally had also immigrated from Germany in 1952, and had her first child, son Ralph. The young family soon moved west to Kitimat where daughter Sylvia was born and they lived there for a few years before settling in Surrey, B.C. where their second son Ed was born. When her husband retired, they moved to Summerland, B.C. and lived in a beautiful house overlooking Lake Okanagan. She then moved back to Surrey after Siggy passed away.

Brigitte was a caring, loving mother and wife who always put her family above herself. She was a calm, quiet lady, unfailingly polite and considerate and she never had a bad word to say about anyone. She delighted in hosting large family gatherings. We have many fond memories of the amazing meals she prepared for birthday, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. Her birthday cakes were legendary. Her home was always immaculate with not a thing out of place. She was also a talented gardener and her homes had large, beautifully landscaped properties.

She is survived by her sons Ralph and Edward, sisters Edith and Agnes, brother Rudolf, grandchildren Graham, Rebecca, Natalie, Trevor, Danny, Nicole and Ryan, and predeceased by husband Siegfried, daughter Sylvia, brother Erwin and sister Charlotte. She leaves behind an extended family in Canada, Germany and the USA.
