Berend Van Eldik

May 9, 1933 — July 19, 2021

Bill is survived by the love of his life of 68 years, Betsie, his daughter Jeannette, son Gerry, grandchildren Daryn, Marnie, Dylan, Jesse, Kendra and Chris, and all their partners, and two great-grandchildren, Bodhi and Skyler.

Bill grew up in the city of Arnhem in Holland, attending art school before coming to Canada with a dream to go into the emerging world of motion-picture animation. With his plans in place and ticket in hand, he then unexpectedly met Betsie and they fell instantly in love. He continued his plans and immigrated to Canada, followed by two years of a romance by way of letters. In 1955 Betsie joined him in Canada and they began their life together, raising four children in Coquitlam, then Port Coquitlam.

Bill took an interest in photography, and first was a photographer for the local newspaper, the Herald, and then became a wedding and portrait photographer. Although he never continued into animation, Bill always dabbled in art, and especially liked to do pen and ink drawings.

Bill was a loving father and “opa”, and he had a great love of dogs. He was an incredible romantic, and he would always talk about his love for Betsie. He was always seen holding her hand and whispering words of affection to her right until his final days. They built a cabin in the Cariboo and enjoyed the simplicity of a peaceful country life.

Bill enjoyed singing in the church choir, and dedicated his retirement years to the Prolife Society. Bill is reunited in heaven with his daughter, Sharon, along with her unborn child, and his son Andrew.
