Alan passed away in the early hours of a beautiful September morning, aged 93. Born in Spokane WA, the son and grandson of mining engineers, he spent his early years in Quatsino and Atlin BC and later broke with family tradition to become a mechanical engineer (UBC’49). He served in the Canadian Army Occupation Force as a Lieutenant in the Canadian Scottish Regiment.
Alan met the love of his life Rosamary June Rogers in Dawson City, YK, and they were married in 1948. He was a devoted father to Barry (1950-1979) and Brenda Lea (Charles Brown), and loving grandfather to Harrison. An avid skier and hiker from his youth, he brought the family to ski at Whistler when it first opened, built a tiny perfect cabin in Emerald, and lived there with Rosamary in retirement.
Alan felt that he and Rosamary “owned” the Whistler mountains and valleys for the countless hours they spend hiking them all for half a century. After years of patrolling the valley trails, he and Rosamary were honoured by the Whistler Municipality with a bench dedication for inspiring Whistler Cross Country to “live like it’s heaven on earth”.
The family is grateful for the loving kindness of those who supported Alan through Whistler Community Health, and later at Hilltop House in Squamish, and invites you to join them in making a memorial donation to the Squamish Hospice Society (http://www.squamishhospice.com/donate/).
Alan’s ashes will be released from the top of Wedge as family and friends gather to remember him on Sunday, September 23 at 9246 Emerald Drive from 2:00 – 4:00 pm.
