Obituary for Wesley Ronald Wood (Ron)

It is with deep sadness that we announce Ron’s passing at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock on September 7, 2022, at the age of 90.

Ron was born on May 23, 1932, on the Wood family homestead near Verwood Saskatchewan. He was raised by his grandparents and was one of the youngest in a large family that included many aunts, uncles and cousins. He learned much about farm life and was proud of the upbringing and the values he received. His ability to recall events in detail from his early years was a source of many great stories.

Ron attended Verwood school to graduation and later attended Luther College in Regina. After starting out with summer jobs on various farms he began a career in bookkeeping that eventually turned into one in sales. Ron married Bibiane Anctil in 1956 and together they had 3 children (Debbie, Ken and Daryl).

Ron had a great way of engaging people and was always willing to chat. He loved to play cards whether it was solitaire, cribbage or whist. He would enter local tournaments and he even played in the B.C. Senior Games. He truly enjoyed his sports (hockey, football, curling and baseball) and was a huge fan of the Vancouver Canadians baseball team, attending games quite regularly. He loved animals whether they were on the farm, pets or wildlife and was very good at bird identification.

Ron was also very much into photography, documenting and filming many family gatherings, vacations and sporting events. He became very good at bringing his old photos and films onto newer media as technology advanced. In his later years he drew on his childhood experiences to write a Wood family history that included personal observations of family members that helped capture their character for the reader.

Ron is predeceased by his son Daryl Wood, his mother Hannah Myhre, sister Beverly (Frank) Pickens, brother Mervyn (Elda) Barns, and grandparents Edward and Margaret Wood. He is survived by his daughter Debbie (Wood) Major, son Ken (Cheryl) Wood, granddaughter Julia (Josh) Budgell, great granddaughter Blaire Budgell, sister Ruth (Dave)Wicks, brother Cecil (Kathy) Myhre and brother Calvin (Lois) Myhre.

The family would like to thank Dr H. Fox for Ron’s long term continued care, and his home care workers at Christmas Manor in Coquitlam (especially Lydia and Monica) for their dedication to providing excellent support at home.

As per Ron’s wishes, he will be interred with a private ceremony at Verwood Cemetery. Please comment on your memories of Ron.
