Obituary for Victoria Mary Zygmunt (Nowicki)

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, Victoria (Vicky) on August 10, 2023, at the at the age of 94.

Victoria was born in Cloverleaf Manitoba, to Joseph and Mary Nowicki. After leaving school, she worked for a short time in Winnipeg before following her older brothers to BC where she settled in Vancouver. There, on a blind date, she met the love of her life, Stanley Zygmunt and they were married in 1952.

After the birth of their first daughter, they decided a larger residence than the Dunbar apartment was needed and bought a small acreage in Clayton. The following years brought a new house built by Stan and helped by mom’s brother, Emeric, and three more daughters.

In 1964 they made the decision to move to Vancouver Island to be closer to Stan’s work. First Lake Cowichan and then Duncan became their home for the next 25 years. Besides being very involved with her family, mom was a tireless volunteer as CWL of St. Edwards Parish, as well as a keen five and ten bowler.

With Stan retired and all the children living independently, Vicky and Stan moved back to the Clayton property in 1987 and constructed their ‘forever home’. Unfortunately, Stan passed all too soon, but Vicky kept herself busy with lawn bowling, where she became a coach as well as five & 10 pin bowling, curling and bridge. She also travelled extensively to eastern Canada, Alaska, China, Cuba, North Africa, and western Europe.

Eventually the house became too much to maintain so she moved to a retirement residence in Langley and as her abilities declined to Normanna Care home. Through all this, her main focus was always on her family who she always encouraged to do their best. She was proud of her daughters and granddaughters’ achievements. She was a resilient, determined woman but eventually her will was not able to overcome her body’s failures.

She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Elizabeth (Pierre), Susan, Denise (Gary) and Cindy as well as two granddaughters, Lindsy, and Michelle. She is also survived by her sister, Bernice Kula as well as many nephews and nieces.

Victoria was predeceased by her husband, Stanley, brothers, Emeric, Louis, Hank, Ted and John and sister Ann.

The family would like to thank the staff at Normanna care home for the wonderful and caring care of Victoria for the past two years.

Forever loved. Forever remembered.

Rest in Peace

A private interment of her ashes will take place at Valley View Cemetery located at 114644 - 72nd Avenue, Surrey BC on August 31st at 2pm. A reception will follow.
