Obituary for Vanda Saba Bosello (Ferronato)

Vanda Saba Bosello (née Ferronato), 93, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2023, in Burnaby, B.C.

Vanda is survived by her husband, Anacleto, her children: Tony (Kelly) and Patricia, three grandchildren: Stephanie (Brent), Leah (Nick), and Colin and two great-grandchildren: Nolan and Luca. She was predeceased by her son Michael.

Vanda lived up to her maiden name, which translates in English to “born of steel”. She was strong and independent throughout her life—a true force of nature. Some might even have called her stubborn! In her hometown of Cassola, outside Bassano del Grappa, she lived through the atrocities of war and left school after Grade 5 to work in a gold factory. One of Vanda’s biggest regrets was not being able to go further with her education. In 1959 she journeyed with Tony and Michael, aged 5 and 2, by ocean liner from Genoa to Halifax, then by rail to Vancouver to join Anacleto, who had arrived two years prior. Two years later Patricia arrived to complete their family.

Vanda devoted her life to raising her family. She was an exceptional cook who brought family together through food, fostering laughter and connection. Her entire life, Vanda was in her element when she was around children. For years she cared for many neighbourhood children, then later her grandchildren. When the great-grandchildren arrived, she lamented that she wasn’t 10 years younger, or she would have looked after them too!

Vanda will affectionately be remembered as an incredible mother, Nonna and Bis-nonna. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy, and they will always remember spending time with her in her backyard blowing bubbles and playing together, as well as being fed delicious treats in the kitchen.

Vanda was a true Ferronato to the very end. She showed remarkable strength and determination and took her last breath on the morning of her great-grandson’s birthday, ensuring she would always be remembered.

At Vanda’s request there will be no funeral. Her remains will be buried alongside Michael’s at Ocean View Cemetery with a private family ceremony.
