Obituary for Marian Theresa De Montigny (Hutchinson)

On the evening of November 17th, 2023, our beloved mother and grandmother, Marian De Montigny, born May 8, 1933, passed away peacefully at 90 years of age with family by her side.

Born in Saskatchewan to Mary Wahl and Thomas Reginald Hutchinson, Marian was an inquisitive child and an unconventional thinker for her time, challenging the norm. She married Richard Sheppard in July 1949 in Prince George, BC. Together they built a life working in logging camps early in their marriage and eventually settled in Terrace, BC. During their time together, they raised 5 children.

She was affectionately called Granny D and Granny Rabbit by her grandchildren. There was always room in her heart to have fun, laugh and be playful, finding enjoyment in the little things in life. She had a gentle, fun loving and caring personality. Spending time with her family was always at the top of the list.

Marian was always skillful with her hands when it came to sewing material, crafts and creating exquisite paper tole artistry. She found solace in the quiet and peaceful pass time of bird watching. She loved baking and when she invited family over for dinner, we knew we were in for a “surprise” of some kind.

Marian is preceded in death by her sister Leah, son Rick and granddaughter Trina.

Survived by her sister Alana (Peter) Wallin, children Shirley (Rob) Aussant, Roger (Florence) Sheppard, Ruby (Don) Clifford and Mary (Natino) Bellantoni. She was blessed to have 14 grandchildren,19 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the amazing staff at New Vista Society for the loving care they provided to Mom during the final years of her life.

Celebration of Life will be held at the Alan Emmott Centre, 6650 Southoaks Crescent, Burnaby at 11:30 am on January 13, 2023.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations to be made to the Alzheimer Society of B.C.
