Obituary for Margaret Ruth Shea (Thomson)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Margaret at Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver, BC. A caring mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, aunt and friend, everyone gravitated toward Margaret's outgoing personality. With a knowing sparkle in her eye, an irresistible laugh and countless clever anecdotes, Margaret was always sure to be the life of the party. She was the embodiment of a life well-lived.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Margaret was often one to challenge conventions. In her teens she won numerous awards as a top speed skater. In her twenties, after moving to Vancouver with her parents and settling in Kerrisdale, Margaret met Bill whom she married in 1958. Bill introduced Margaret to golf, a sport which quickly became her passion. She was the first female golfer to score a hole-in-one at Beach Grove Golf Club and was a winner of a gold medal at the 1980 BC Summer Games. Margaret then went on to Captain the Ladies' Team at the Point Grey Golf Club, where the actor Sean Connery once had the rare pleasure of playing a round with her. Margaret made many friends in Vancouver, Vernon and Sechelt, where she retired to in 2003 after a successful career with the Workers' Compensation Board.

She is pre-deceased by her husband Bill (1936-2013), and survived by her sons Michael and Robert, daughter Karen, granddaughters Aria and Rose, grandsons Ziggy and Rory, sister Betty (Blackburn), brother David, daughter-in-law Elaine, sons-in-law Peter and Kyle, her nephews and nieces, including Analisa, who provided companionship to Margaret over the last few years. The family would like to offer a heartfelt thanks to the team at Lynn Valley Care Centre who cared for Margaret during this challenging time. A celebration of Margaret's life will be held later this year on Bowen Island, date to be announced.
