Obituary

Obituary for Marcel Peter VanderSluys

It is with extreme sadness that we announce Marcel Peter VanderSluys aged 59 of Port Coquitlam, BC, originally born in Montreal, Quebec, passed away from complications from Antiphospholipid Syndrome on Saturday, March 21st, 2020. He was a cherished Husband, Father, Opa, Son, Brother and dear friend to many! He has left to grieve many close family and friends. Mourning his passing is his beloved wife Kimberly VanderSluys and Daughters, Carly and Talia and Step-Son, Matthew (Emily) Wiseman and Grandson Avary. Foster Sons Jimmy and Clarence Modeste. Loving Mother Norma, Siblings Carla (Jens Christian), Hans (Vishaka) and Helga (Albert). Nephew Gregory (Cynthia) and Nieces Chloe, Ainsley and Saskia and Great Niece Livia. Lastly his Bestfriend of 45yrs. Grant (Brigitte)😢 He has now joined our Son Nicholas, his Father Leo and his Father-in-law Nelson.

Marcel’s last few years have been extremely challenging with relentless medical issues related to his Blood Disorder. Only this past year were we able to reconnect with our Foster Son’s and he thoroughly enjoyed their visits. However, right to the end he remained positive and was always talking about us travelling places together, or attending the Rolling Stones as he has wanted for so long! He was determined to beat his illness and would often tell me “I can’t abandon our girls,” but his Spirit ultimately wasn’t able to win out against his disorder. In his younger years Marcel did a ton of travelling and actually went on a trip around the world. He has sooo many wonderful stories he has shared and re-shared over the years! He often talked about us making that same trip again as a family. Sadly, we will have to continue to live vicariously through his fascinating stories. His passing has left a HUGE void in all our lives, but we know he is watching over us and look forward to the time we will be reunited.

Dear Kimberly, Matthew, Talia and Carly
We are deeply saddened by Marcel’s passing, especially as we know he had a strong will not to give up the fight against his very unfair illness during the last few years. Although we live far away and did not get to know him so well, we heard so many stories about him from my wife, his big sister Carla. We admired his direct no-nonsense way speaking and his commitment and love for his extended family, his wife, his daughters and step son. Our thoughts are with you as you go forward into a new reality, but we know that Marcel’s open minded spirit, positive energy and strength will guide you through this process. Condolences from Frederik and I.

My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Vandersluys, Helga, Carla and Hans Kimberly and children.
My parents, Grant and I will miss Marcel so much. He was like a member of our own family. I've known Marcel since before my teenage years. A brother to me who gave me advice when i could not talk to anyone else. Endless shows of SNL on Saturdays (we didnt go out....no money) I remember when i was 16 Marcel talking in depth about Carl Sagan's theory on global warming which he described so colorfully and detailed and with such passion. He could tell a story like nobody could. Singing a goofy song with the letters from A to Z. Endless lifts across the bridge when i was stuck and not even asking him. Influencing my music taste by introducing Genesis (carpet crawlers) and widening my scope of music even before i turned 14. Going to bars and concerts with my brother Grant and Marcel and his friends. Alot of great memories which i will hold on to. Yes like Helga mentioned house parties which Grant and Marcel were present and so much more.... Marcel a kind, intelligent, curious adventurer with much compassion for anyone who crossed his path. My family loved him very much and i can go on and on. He will be missed but his memories will live on and on in our hearts. RIP my dear friend. Lv Gail, Ali, Sam and Bianca....

Marcel was my beloved little brother. As the ‘girl in the middle’ growing up between two boys (at least until Helga came along) we were rarely apart, and I have so many fond memories of our time together as kids. And when we grew up, Marcel was always there for me; I crashed on the floor of his many apartments when I was a student, we shared a black cat named after his motorcycle exhaust system, and I could always rely on him to share his honest thoughts on any important events in my life. When I finally left Montreal to study at the other end of Canada, Marcel showed up after six months! And decided to go to SFU, just like his big sister. We followed each other around the world too; he came to Indonesia and Bali, I taught him to dive, and I met him on short notice in numerous airports in Asia, including a particularly memorable visit to Seoul in the middle of winter. We had so much fun.

Marcel could converse on any subject with intelligence, insight and compassion. He was an amazing father, raising his children, alongside his beloved Kimberly, to be curious, sensitive and above all, open to the world. I see so many of his wonderful traits in his kids, and I know he will be keeping an eye on them from wherever he is. The Balinese believe that when a good person dies, we can grieve for our loss but must also be happy for them, as they are simply moving on to better things. And that they will come back, in some other way, shape or form. I can only imagine all of the wonderful things my little brother might become. Safe travels my dear Marcel.
