Obituary for Lorelie Eunice Cavanaugh (Lang)

Lorelie Eunice Cavanaugh (née: Lang) of Vancouver, BC, passed after a short illness, surrounded by her children night and day during her final weeks. She will be deeply missed by family and friends!

She is survived by her children Mark (Betty), Romilly (Laura), Bronwyn (Adrian) and Meredith (Brian), her grandchildren, Kira and Cameron, and her sister Dorothy. She is pre-deceased by her devoted husband, D’Arcy Cavanaugh, parents Reginald and Marie Lang, and her brothers, Darrell and Leon.

As anyone who met her knows, Lorelie was a larger-than-life character. While still a young teenager, she won a full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, UK, but was unable to attend school there, because children were being evacuated at the time due to WWII. She never lost her flair for the dramatic, and even in her final weeks was making her nurses laugh out loud.

After graduating from Britannia High School, she went on to enroll in Vancouver General Hospital’s Nursing School, where she made lifelong friends and became an operating room nurse, practicing locally and in Seattle, Montréal, and London. She was later a flight attendant with CP Air, when commercial aviation was in its infancy, and nurses were in high demand in case anything went sideways.

Her greatest joys were her family, travelling around the globe with D’Arcy, cooking, and crocheting. As it happens, Lorelie died on the same day “the music died”, which makes sense given her profound love of classical and big band music, and the heartbreak that her loved ones are feeling now.

The family sends out a huge thank you to the staff at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, the BC Cancer Agency, and Gemma, for the wonderful care Lorelie received.

A celebration of life will be arranged after covid restrictions have been lifted. The family hopes this will be in the early spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to a charity of your choosing.
