Obituary for Kin "Ken" Sung Louie 雷健生

Kin “Ken” Sung Louie, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, born December 18, 1929, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2023 at 94 years of age.

Born in Ho Cheung village, Guangdong, China, Ken was brought up by his mother, Lowe Yuk Quon, while his father, Louie Jew Nam, immigrated to Victoria, BC to forge a new life for the family.  Ken married Leong Mew Wun in 1953, before immigrating to Victoria in 1954.  Wun and their young son, Jim, joined Ken in 1958, where they bought and operated Uplands Grocery in Oak Bay and soon after welcomed daughters Irene and Maureen.

The family moved to White Rock in 1970 to open King Louie’s Restaurant, then lived in Burnaby and Vancouver and ran a variety of businesses, including a grocery store, café, and gift shops, also in Surrey and New Westminster.  Ken and Wun retired in 1995 and settled in Coquitlam together with their son and family.

Ken loved music and played numerous instruments, was an enthusiastic Canucks fan, and was an avid backyard gardener producing foot-long winter melons, vegetables and flowers.  Always armed with a camera, Ken took multiple pictures of everything and everyone, hoping to capture the moment forever.  Ken had a thirst for knowledge, learned to use the computer in his senior years, read daily newspapers, and stayed current with world events.  Ken was an active member of the Chinese Pentecostal Church in Vancouver since 1980, involved in bible studies and supported new members. Ken also created a blog, Ken S Louie Bible Study, translating scripture into Chinese that was read worldwide.

Ken generously and warmly opened his heart, home and kitchen to everyone, was a fun-loving jokester with a great sense of humour, had an infectious smile and laugh, and was everyone’s #1 fan.  He had a positive outlook, was compassionate, and cared for all humanity. He was grateful for his life in Canada.

Family was the most important thing to Ken.  For years, he and Wun hosted weekly dinners to bring family together, always sending everyone home with leftovers.  Dishes fondly remembered were his chicken wings and clam chowder, which he would make three different batches of to accommodate food allergies.  Ken’s greatest pride was his grandchildren, all of whom were blessed to have lived with him, learned from him, and received his unconditional love and support.

Ken is predeceased by his parents, Jew Nam and Quon Yuk, and son-in-law Mike Wylie.  Ken is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Leong Mew Wun, children Jim (Rachael), Irene (Lou) LaRock and Maureen (Leo), brother Tommy (Anna), and nephews Andrew (Lena) Leong, Norman (Amy) and Edmond (Sherry); his grandchildren Amber (Kenji), Jason (Rosie), Conor (Jasmine), Isaac, Aleia (Bex), who affectionately called him Granddaddy, Yeh Yeh and Gung Gung; and his treasured great-grandchildren Oliver, Hannah and Lee.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Eagle Ridge Hospital staff in the ER and C2B for their compassion and professionalism.

A private family gathering will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice.

Please take a moment to share a special memory and/or photo of Ken.
