Obituary for Feng Mei Chen

Feng Mei Chen (March 14, 1919 - October 6, 2021)

Feng Mei (called Mei) was born in March 1919 in Zhejiang Province in China. She was adopted by a great aunt, married very early and had ten children. Only four of them survived to adulthood. Her husband passed away when she was in her 40s and she did not remarry.

Mei lived in her rural village for half a century, until her son Chih got married. She moved to Beijing to help take care of their new baby. She was not expecting to permanently live in the big city but that was what happened.

When Mei was 72 she immigrated to Canada with her son’s family. Everything was completely different but Mei was enthusiastic about her new life and retirement in a foreign country. She was open to new experiences, eager to learn and enjoyed lots of travels. Even in her 80s she helped look after her granddaughter’s babies. She enjoyed robust health throughout her long life.

Mei was gentle, humble yet tough. She did not ask much from life and always accepted whatever life gave her. She treasured every little nice thing she could have and gave her time and effort to help others without a second thought. With nimble hands, resourcefulness and immense patience, Mei created many fine detailed artwork. She was always able to fix anything that’s broken.

Mei is survived by two remaining children, 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and countless great great grandchildren.

Grandma you are not gone. The memories will be lasting and your life continues through all your descendants. We appreciate everything you have done for the family, and thanks for the good genes!
