Obituary for Alexander Douglas MacLellan

Born in Montreal to Francis H. and Florence M (nee Reilly) MacLellan, predeceased by first wife Barbara and second wife Clementi Anne, daughters Debbie and Beverley, and brother Gordon. He is survived by daughters Kathy (Kathleen), Nancy, Marilyn, Susan and step daughter Kathleen; brothers William and Allan, 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Alex attended West Hill High in Montreal, becoming a star defenseman for the Montreal Junior Canadiens(1948-1949) and through a sports scholarship, for the University of Michigan (1950-1953). Nicknamed “Herky” he played in every game for three years including the NCAA Championships, with the team winning the titles for each of those years( 1951 to 1953). He was selected an All American and chosen MVP by his teammates(1953). In 1978 he, along with his teammates were inducted into the UofM Hockey Hall of Fame.

After graduating from the UofM School of Business Administration, he became a successful salesperson and senior executive in the consumer electronics field with RCA Canada and Philips Electronics. He travelled extensively in his early career through northern Ontario – from Sudbury, to Timmins, to North Bay and Sault St. Marie. In those days he often car-pooled with his great friend Stewart Touzel and the stories that have been told! He continued the travel theme with Philips Electronics - crisscrossing Canada from British Columbia, to Montreal, to Halifax and finally back “home” to British Columbia. Along the way his family grew to 6 girls and to top that, he added a step daughter in 1978.

In retirement he and his second wife Anne discovered the snowbird life in Mesa Arizona where over more than 20 years, they made many new lifetime fiends. Alex was an avid sportsman and fan (few broadcast hockey, football or baseball games escaped his attention). He became a proficient senior tennis and baseball player in the warm fall seasons in Arizona. Home in Vancouver he joined and played golf at the Vancouver Golf Club.

Brother Allan, daughter Susan and husband Mark, daughters Kathy and Nancy had the good fortune to say goodbye in person. We know Alex would like to say thank you to so many friends who took the time to stay in touch – his address book is full of your names! - as well as to the kind caregivers at Royal Columbian and Eagle Ridge Hospitals.

A celebration of Alex’s life is planned for October 2, 2022 at the Vancouver Golf Club. To assist in contacting you, please send an email to daughter Nancy at njavery@telus.net or leave a message at 250-592-0201.
