Obituary for Dr. William Patrick Stewart

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of William Patrick Stewart (Pat) on January 28th in Port Moody B.C. Pat was born on June 24th 1947 in Allenby, B.C. His family moved to Penticton where he attended Penticton Secondary School and graduated with honors. His love of learning was apparent at a very early age. He received his civil engineering degree and worked as a consultant at various firms through BC, Alberta and California. Pats quest for learning never waned and he went on to achieve his Masters degree then his doctorate at UBC in 1990. While continuing his studies Pat was introduced to teaching at Royal Roads military academy on Vancouver Island. It was there that he found his true calling. Once Pat received his doctorate degree he settled in at BCIT in the civil engineering department from 1994 until his retirement in 2014. “Dr. Dirt” loved his job and his passion was sharing his knowledge with his students who appreciated his love of learning. He took great pride in each and every one of them. Pat’s penchant for perfection (98% perfect) drove him to many great achievements in his lifetime. Pat was also an avid music lover as anyone close to him can attest. If anyone was not familiar with “Dr. Hook” you soon would be after spending an evening with Pat. It is also a well- kept secret that Pat was the leg wrestling champion of BC, well at least the family champion. Left to fondly remember Pat are his wife, Donna, his daughters; Heather Stewart (André Desputeau) and Suzanne Stewart (Seth Sundberg), his stepdaughter Dawn Gilligan (Andrew) and grandchildren Matthew (Venessa Deoliveira), Niki Demant (Kegan) Cody and Jake; stepdaughter Tracey Dayton (Mark) and grandchildren Amanda Chiu (Mike Wright) Tessa Chiu, Neil and Heidi and stepson Dan Shaw (Mia Kivari), his grandson Loch Sundberg and great grandson Bentley Deoliviera Strong, brothers; Dave (Elaine) and Keith (Fern), sister Bev McQueen (Jo) and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Pat’s life will be held on Saturday March 24th at 3118 Plateau Boulevard, Coquitlam, BC from 1:00pm - 5:00pm. Condolences and legacies can be left at:
